Over the past two months Smarter than Smoking Development staff have been attending Junior Clubs to deliver Coach Development Clinics. Research undertaken by the Australian Rugby Union shows that the number one reason players drop out of rugby union is related to coaching. With this is mind the Smarter than Smoking Development team has endeavoured to assist Junior Club development by offering and providing coach education at club venues.
The Coach Development Clinics consisted of a Smarter than Smoking Development Officer putting a team of players between the ages of 13 – 16 through their paces whilst coaches were talked through the activities by another Development officer. The sessions focused on ruck & maul techniques and activities and support at the ruck and maul.
Feedback from the six clubs who took up the opportunity was extremely positive and the Development Team will look to roll out a similar coach education project in 2010.
The seven clubs who participated were:
- Southern Lions: Wednesday 24 June
- University: Thursday 2 July
- Nedlands: Tuesday 21 July
- Joondalup: Tuesday 4 August
- Arks: Wednesday 5 August
- North Coast: Thursday 8 August
- Associates: Tuesday 11 August
Congratulations to Associates who were able to provide fifteen coaches on Tuesday 11 August. Overall forty-five coaches attended the seven clinics. Thank you to all those coaches who volunteered their time to help develop their clubs and young players.
